Free Guided Drawing Book!!
I am putting together a little series of free guided drawing booklets as a thank you for your love and support over the last year. It has been a difficult year with my daughter's illness (she is doing amazingly!) and my sister's failing health. I cannot thank you enough for the emails, prayers and words of comfort. I adore my bloggy friends!

Hi Sally, you won't believe it, but this was one of my next to-do list - to go through your drawings and compile a booklet like this. You are so generous and thoughtful. I wrote my thesis last year on "Teaching through the Arts" - so what you are saying about the value of art, developmentally, the symbolic relationships, and the thinking processes involved, wow! how I wish more mainstream educators would catch on! ;-)

Sally, we just used your "drawing a pig" page today with our kids. 39 out of the 40 pre-k students could do it! Thank you SO much! Do you come up with these on your own, and could you make more animals? I just had to let you know how well the kids did, and how much I personally appreciate this.

Sharon - I do make them up. I can create drawing instructions for about anything you want. If you let me know what you want - I will include them in the next round of e-books. :)
ReplyDeleteI even thought about make a video showing people how to create a guided drawing out of any subject. It really is a simple process.
So happy it was a success!!!
I really appreciate your pages because being blind, I can't draw myself. But I can give the page to a 5th-grade volunteer in my class to help the pre-k students. Today I used your bat drawing page and Kevin (a 5th-grader) told me that my pre-k student Jonathan's bat looked better than the one that he did! We're doing a unit right now on animals. I would be so grateful if you could maybe include a lion, a horse, and/or an elephant in your next round of e-books. I know this is a large task. If there's anything that you need, let me know. I'm really big into finding books and music for people.

Thank you so much for this! I enjoyed reading about how this type of activity is good for the kiddos. I used a guided drawing today in the daycare where I work. One little guy was unable to process the instructions and after reading "The Power of Guided Drawing" I understand why she had problems. I will keep working with these little ones to help them develop these skills.
ReplyDeleteIt is important to honor the developmental stage the children are at. Guided drawing such not begin until the second half of pre-kindergarten. At the later half of 4 years old, the child's ability to process the instructions and then re-produce the shapes is beginning to arise. Keep the drawings super simple and go very slowly. Do not expect the drawing to be of any standard. I work to create an environment that whatever drawing ability is there - is honored. I do not recommend working with children under the age of three or young fours.
