This last week, I lead my kinders in drawing castles. I adapted my original drawing instructions (see below) by adding extra towers to each side. I demonstrated how to draw stones and bricks on the castle. The children loved it!

Oh how I love Heart Garlands!
I love, love, love the joy of a heart garland. Aren't they divine? I found several worth sharing on the internet. There are a few very creative ideas for making garlands. My kinders love making garlands. What a lovely thing to do during centers. . .
When I saw this, I immediately thought I could make this into a "Sight Word garland!" I know, totally a kindergarten teacher reaction but hey, what can I say!

This was a photo I found through pinterest - unfortunately it did not hold an originating website url. I thought this would be a wonderful project to do but use paper hearts. I love tree branches and twigs.

Dollar Store Capes!
It was a room full of Kings and Queens of Hearts. To make it proper - each child made their own cape and crown. Oooo - the fun we had! (These would be so great for a birthday party!)
To make the cape - all you need is a plastic table cloth from the dollar store. Cut in half lengthwise. Then cut each length into 3 equal sections for a total of 6 capes per table cloth. My dollar store had bags of Valentine foam stickers that the children decorated their capes with.

A gathering of kings! One of the kings lept into the air and when he landed he told my intern, "Did you see how I glided down with this cape?" Magic was in the air!
To make a closure, use sticky back round velcro discs. Stick to cape placing on one side and the other on the opposite (see above) for correct overlap when wearing.
Front of cape when worn.
Let the children decorate their capes with foam stickers.

Making the crowns - I used purchased pre-cut gold crowns. I cut out hearts from scrapbook paper and had foam sticks from the dollar store for the children to decorate with. I loved how individual each child's design turned out.

Make a Love Bug
I work at a local museum and today they had the sweetest project - Love Bugs. Create the bug out of paper and doily hearts. Add googly eyes, pipe cleaner legs. . . whatever details catch your fancy! I think a love bug would be the perfect little Valentine!

Make Your Own Math Games - Fit for Royality!
The following math games are wonderful for number recognition, one to one correspondence, counting, taking turns, and beginning addition.
Addition - the game of friendship! This is a fun little game to play and easy to make. It has three objectives - to practice identifying less than and more than; to add two numbers together and to correctly identify number symbols.
To play:
Once upon a time there lived a wee little princess named Princess Less and a princess named Princess More. Princess Less always seemed to have less than Princess More. AND - Princess More always seemed to have more than Princess Less. One day Princess Less decided to go to the Queen to find out how she could be have more and live happily ever after. The Queen told her, "Dear wee Princess Less if you become friends with Princess More - you both will have more! Life is sweeter when you join together with friends. There is always more when friends share." Princess Less was so happy! That day she went to see Princess More and became friends! And in their friendship they found they had more than ever!
Make game board by cutting a 12 x 12 scrapbook paper into a crown shape. Cut out a heart shape and put it at the middle the crown at the top. Glue down the circles found in the link I have provided. I used two wooden characters found at Micheal's. I modge podged heart tissue paper on to the wooden figures.

War of The Kingdoms
You need as many game boards as players. Minimum of two boards/players. Each game board is a kingdom. The player is the King or Queen of that Kingdom. You can cut the scrapbook paper or construction paper as a crown or in a castle shape.

This is a game where the players roll the dice and then put that number of markers down on the board. The first player to fill their 20's board, is the Kingdom that wins!
The Counting House
This is a perfect game to use pennies as the counters. The child simply rolls the dice and puts that many pennies to the 30's grid until it is filled. But not before they hear the story of Mr. Thirty:
Once there was a man named Thirty. He loved to wander the wood and spend his days walking . He loved the sun and the sweet smell of the morning dew. One day the King stopped him on the road. "How many are you?!" Demanded the King. "Why I am not sure because no one has asked before!" answered Thirty. The king looked at Thirty and saw that he had three rows of ten but he wanted to be sure. He sent Thirty to his huge Counting House and demanded he be counted for! Please check for the King - roll the King's royal dice and fill Thirty. How many coins did it take?
To make game board cut out a crown shape from a 12 x 12 sheet of scrapbook paper. Print the 30's grid on to crown. Put 30 pennies into a little bag or basket. Find a little character to be Mr. or Mrs. Thirty.

Laminate boards for durability. These games should be played with adult supervision and are intended for children 5 years old or older as they use small pieces on the game boards. Please adjust for safety if you are making these for younger children.

Make a Love Bird
This is a lovely project for Valentine's - making little love birds out of watercolor paper. The sweetest part is writing on the back of the birds the things you love. Isn't gratitude a wonderful way to honor Valentine's day? I will do this with my class when I return to school (hopefully Friday or Monday). I start by bringing the mood of awe and reverence for the many things we have in our lives that are wonderful - those scrumptious details of daily life!
Making the Birds: you will need watercolor paper, red and yellow paint, brushes, pink embroidery floss and gel medium (heavy glue).
Paint a wash of color on the watercolor paper. It is beautiful to add a tad of yellow.

Cut out a bird tracer. It works great to make tracers out of old file folders. Here is a link to a pattern I used: bird pattern - this pattern is for sewing but I used as a tracer.
Let the children trace the birds and their wings. Cut them out.
Make a double-thread hanger out of the pink floss. Put a dollop of glue on the bird. Put the hanger's end on top of the glue and press the wing into it. Hold for a few seconds to make bond. Write what you love in life on the back of the birds. Hang on tree, mantle, or make a garland of love!
